Light-weight composite structures with tailored mechanical, electrical and thermal properties

Alongside their excellent specific mechanical properties, fibre-reinforced thermoplastics (FRT) bear the potential to reduce manufacturing costs due to their high-volume production capability while also being well recyclable at a low energy level. The areas of application, however, are still limited concerning thermal and electrical properties.

The aim of the LITAPROP project is to develop innovative FRPs with locally designed mechanical, electrical and thermal properties. This will be achieved by using thermoplastic intermediates in the form of thermoplastic veils or strips modified with nano or micro fillers. The subject of the project is also to understand the mechanisms in adjusting the properties of materials and to develop and optimize methods for designing and manufacturing composite materials so that the entire process can be transferred from the laboratory to the industrial scale. Accordingly, the LITAPROP project mainly focuses on three research areas:

  1. development of novel products in the form of thermoplastic veils and strips doped with nano- and micro-fillers, which will serve as physical modification of polymeric composites reinforced with carbon or glass fibers,
  2. development of innovative carbon or glass fiber reinforced polymer composites with locally designed electrical and/or thermal properties while maintaining good mechanical properties,
  3. development of a complete composite material manufacturing process, including material design, fabrication, verification, and demonstration.

TMBK PARTNERS’ role in the project

TMBK Partners Sp. z o.o., as part of the LITAPROP project, will be responsible for manufacturing intermediates such as veils and strips containing nano- and micro-fillers, which will be used to improve the electrical and/or thermal properties of polymer matrix composites. TMBK Partners Sp. z o.o. leads WP2, which deals with the development of nano/micro composite intermediates. TMBK Partners Sp. z o.o. will also contribute to WP1, WP3 and WP4, which deal with determining material requirements, characteristics of intermediates and modified composites. It will ensure the supply of intermediates for modification and characterization of composites. In WP5, TMBK Partners Sp. z o.o. will work on defining operating limits and production costs. In addition, in WP6, TMBK Partners Sp. z o.o. will produce intermediates for the construction of a demonstrator to see how the obtained material properties on a laboratory scale can be scaled up to TRL 6. TMBK Partners Sp. z o.o. will also participate in the preparation of documentation.
